The VAR Revolution: Now With Extra Apologies

Remember when VAR was supposed to fix football once and for all? We were promised a golden age of zero mistakes, where high-tech replays would finally give every team a fair shake.

Instead, we got a group of refs in a broom closet staring at grainy screens, taking five minutes to check if a player's big toe was offside, and still somehow managing to ruin the game.

Take the recent Manchester derby. A goal was allowed to stand that left everyone watching scratching their heads, forcing the refereeing body to hastily issue an apology and admit an"error of judgment"—which is just corporate speak for "our guys completely botched it."

Meanwhile, over in Spain, the Madrid derby delivered its own brand of video-assistedcomedy. A brutal challenge went completely unpunished in real-time, and VAR didn't even blink. The Technical Committee of Referees later had to hold their hands up and admit a glaring mistake over the missed red card. Apologies and reprimands followed, proving once again that adding screens to football doesn't stop refereeing errors; it just multiplies the number of people who can get it wrong.

VAR was supposed to kill the controversy. Instead, it just gave it a control room, a bigger budget, and a weekly apology letter. Brilliant.
